We continue to be the only residential facility for victims of domestic and sexual violence in Boone County. The current facility was built in 1993 and is able to house 25 women and children comfortably. Along with staff, a core group of dedicated volunteers ensure victim access to services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We provide a wide array of services to victims of domestic or sexual violence. The services are designed to empower women who have been battered or abused by an intimate partner and can provide the initial stage of the process of taking back control of their life. Services are offered at both residential and non-residential locations. We provide the following services at no cost to domestic and sexual violence victims and their children.

Mission Statement

To provide safety, shelter, education and transitional support for those who have been affected by domestic and sexual violence and to empower all to create a safer community.

Our Vision

A community free from domestic and sexual violence, where healthy relationships thrive.

Our History

True North began as the “The Shelter” in the 1970’s when a group of University of Missouri graduate students formed a volunteer organization to serve survivors of rape. As soon as the organization became known, the volunteers were overwhelmed with requests for service by women who were experiencing intimate partner violence.

True North is now a comprehensive domestic and sexual violence victim service program. The services provided are designed to empower those who have been battered or abused by an intimate partner, enabling them to begin the healing process and work towards regaining control of their lives again.

Goal

The goal of True North is to provide all victims with safe housing, advocacy and support. This advocacy and support may encompass initial contact through continuous counseling, protection, housing assistance, and appropriate legal actions.
